Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues wanted to extend students learning about Jazz through the summer and began the JazzFest Jazz Camp in 2011. In its 8th year, JazzFest Jazz Camp continues to grow in fun and popularity.
At camp, students get to learn from incredible instructors and a guest artist through a variety of offerings. Camp class offerings include Jazz improvisation, Jazz Theory, History of Jazz, Combo Rehearsal, Big Band Rehearsal, Lessons, Concerts, Master Classes, Evening concerts with faculty, guests, and students. In addition to learning and growing their passion for music, this camp captures everything students should enjoy in the summer – fun-filled, build new friendships, and life-long memories!
A huge highlight of the camp is performing on stage at JazzFest! The top camp band will perform on the Main Stage at JazzFest. JazzFest is the biggest jazz and blues festival in the upper Midwest! Featuring past performances by Joe Walsh, Sheryl Crow, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Little Feat, Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, North Mississippi Allstars, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Bettye LaVette, Tower of Power, Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples, and much more.

Eligibility: All incoming 7th through completed 12th-grade musicians may apply for submission.
Registration: To register, fill out an application online. Also, please submit a recommendation by campers school band director, and tuition (which includes a $35 non-refundable deposit to be applied to your camp tuition). All campers are required to audition at camp to allow the camp director to place you in the correct ensemble for your current skill level.
Chris Vadala will be joining Jazz Camp! One of the country’s foremost woodwind artists, Chris Vadala is in demand as a jazz/classical performer and educator. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings to date, as well as innumerable jingle sessions, film and TV scores, performing on all the saxophones, flutes and clarinets. A native of Poughkeepsie, New York, he graduated from the Eastman School of Music Education, received an M.A. in clarinet from Connecticut College, and pursued postgraduate study in woodwind doubling at Eastman.
Vocalists will learn to sing with an ensemble, combo and develop “jazz” singing skills. Special lessons will be available such as style, interpretation, vocal technique, introduction to music theory, scat singing and more. Plus, top vocalists will be featured with the jazz combos at JazzFest!
Space is limited to vocalists! Vocal applicants will have to audition before final acceptance.
1. A standard jazz tune (Fly Me to the Moon, Stormy Weather, etc.); please bring a copy of the sheet music for the accompanist
2. Auditionees will be required to perform range and tonal memory tests

Dr. Paul Schilf, Camp Director
Dr. Schilf serves as Camp Director, instructs the Brass section, and grades 9-12 jazz band ensembles. Dr. Schilf is an active guest conductor adjudicator and clinician throughout the country.
Jim McKinney, Percussion/Rhythm Section
Mr. McKinney is the Former Director of Bands at South Dakota State University. During camp, he will instruct the Rhythm section and grades 6-8 jazz band ensembles. He also plays the drums for the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Jazz Diversity Project, which tours the state of South Dakota.
Joel Shotwell, Woodwinds
Mr. Shotwell is an active saxophone player and educator will instruct the Woodwinds section during JazzFest Jazz camp. He also plays the saxophone for the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Jazz Diversity Project, which tours the state of South Dakota.
Denis Perry is currently the high school choir director in Brookings, South Dakota, Denise has taught all levels of K-12 vocal music in her 21 years with the Brookings district. Denise earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from SDSU, and a Masters of Music in Music Education from USD. She has served in the capacity of church music coordinator and worship leader, festival adjudicator, guest conductor, and private voice and piano instructor. She is an active member of ACDA, and currently serves as the South Dakota Repertoire and Resources Chair for Vocal Jazz.
Cancellations made by June 20 will be refunded minus the $30 deposit.
Upon receiving your application, submission, and tuition, you will receive information detailing the schedule, facilities and rules and regulations. Application and enrollment imply agreement to abide by all JazzFest Jazz Camp and Augustana University rules and regulations.
