Hot Club of San Francisco
November 4, 2005 8pm Orpheum Theatre

Imagine yourself in Paris during the 1920's... the crowded streets of the Latin Quarter, the sounds of Gypsy music fill the air... where you can dine with artist Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway one night, and share a glass of wine with Jean Cocteau or Henri Matisse the next. What a creative world of art and music- enter the Hot Club of San Francisco.

The HCSF is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. The group is a set of string players, three guitarists, a violinist and a stand-up bass player. Hearing the ensemble carries the listener back to the 1920's and the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz.

From festivals in Mexico and France to concert halls across North America, The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive.

Mike Miller Quintet
January 14, 2006 8pm Orpheum Theatre

An All-Star Evening of music like you have never heard!

Mike Miller has a range of experience that challenges the imagination. Consider that Miller has worked with jazz pianist Chick Corea, diva/comedienne Bette Midler, pop craftsmen Gino Vanelli and Burton Cummings, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, Wall of Voodoo's Stan Ridgeway, film composer and former Devo front man Mark Mothersbaugh, rock and roll eccentric Frank Zappa, and many others. Many know Miller by his love for making music combined with the humor and wit that have always been part of his playing.

The Mike Miller Quintet will feature Miller on guitar, Walt Fowler on trumpet, Albert Wing on tenor sax, Jimmy Johnson on bass and Chad Wackerman on drums.

The Bad Plus
February 3, 2006 8pm Orpheum Theatre

"The Bads have jazzmen's ability to improvise, a classical way with melody and phrasing, and the elephantine touch of rockers...It's not easy music, but it is fun and it surely stretches our sense of what music is." - The Independent (London)

All three members of The Bad Plus hail from the Midwest: Reid and David from Minnesota and Ethan from Wisconsin. The group's major label debut, These Are The Vistas, was released in February 2003 with glowing reviews from traditional jazz outlets and more: ("A bolt from the blue--galvanic, improbable, discrete, unforeseen..." - JazzTimes); "Bad to the bone, hot players with hard-rock hearts..." - Rolling Stone); ("...among the freshest-sounding albums of the year..." - Newsweek).

Suspicious Activity? is the first new Bad Plus studio album since the critically-acclaimed Give (released March 2004). In the meantime, the group has racked-up some 250 performances on four continents, becoming one of the most telepathically tight and musically adventurous bands on the planet. Bringing its music to venues outside the traditional jazz concert circuit, The Bad Plus has drawn audiences from the realms of indie rock, techno and jam bands--the group's set at Bonnaroo being among one of the most buzzed-about events of the festival--and is on the front lines of an emerging new alternative music.

Chris Botti
March 10, 2006 8pm Great Hall, Washington Pavilion

"A break-out musical star." - Los Angeles Times

Ever since he was here for JazzFest 2004, Trumpet player Chris Botti's career has taken off like a rocket.

Botti is a gifted instrumentalist, a talented composer, and a charismatic performer who since the release of his first solo album in 1995 has created a series of recordings that have made him a virtual genre of one in the realm of contemporary jazz. On his gold album, When I Fall In Love, the best-selling trumpet virtuoso expands the range of his earlier work with an album devoted to once and future classic love songs.

Chris Botti, recently picked as one of People magazines "2004's 50 Most Beautiful People," breathes new soul through a singular combination of lush atmospheres and thoughtful improvisations; he has earned both critical acclaim and mainstream appreciation.

Botti's newest release, To Love Again, features 13 new songs all wonderfully woven to capture the comforting and passionate essence that Chris and his trumpet playing have become known for. But this is no ordinary instrumental record. With help from some of the most well-known voices in music, To Love Again is also unique collection of tracks that are every bit filled with emotion and yet serene at the same time. Michael Bublé, Paul Buchanan, Paula Cole, Gladys Knight, Renee Olstead, Rosa Passos, Jill Scott, Steven Tyler, and Sting all lend their warm and soothing voices to the new album, each a welcome addition to Chris's harmonic trumpet and providing a distinct flavor to each song.

Karrin Allyson
April 8, 2006 8pm Orpheum Theatre

"The stuff that shivers are made of, innocent, sexy and world weary." - Washington Post

The two-time Grammy Award-nominated Allyson has recorded a series of nine CDs for Concord Records, each of which have showcased her astonishing breadth of repertoire, from standards by Gershwin and Porter to Brazilian bossa nova to samba and Theolnious Monk. Most recently, the vocalist has sharpened her focus, taking on in turn French and Brazilian music, the genius of John Coltrane, and the blues. Karrin Allyson spends two days out of three on the road, playing the major jazz festivals and clubs of the U.S. and making repeated tours overseas. As well as traditional jazz venues, Allyson has appeared at Carnegie Hall as part of a special tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. When one listens to Allyson, you hear heart, intelligence, and musical sophistication.
